Subject area assignments for the NYC Teaching Collaborative program are based on the following criteria:
- Meeting both New York State and university academic eligibility requirements outlined for each subject area
- NYC Department of Education need for teachers in particular subject areas
- Candidate preferences
We do our best to assign candidates to subject areas that they are interested in teaching, and request this information in the Preferences section of the online application. We cannot guarantee that candidates will be assigned to the subject area that they most prefer.
In some cases, candidates are not academically eligible for any of the subject areas that they prefer and are then assigned to a subject area for which they qualify. In other cases, candidates prefer subject areas that are already filled to capacity and are then assigned to a subject area for which they qualify and still has availability. Ultimately, we ask that candidates remain flexible regarding subject area assignments, since our mission as a program is to provide teachers to the students who need them most.
