Subject area assignments are made based on your preferences as indicated in your online application, your actual eligibility to teach your preferred subject areas, and the anticipated hiring needs in New York City across your preferred subject areas. *Note that the subject areas listed below are based on last year's NYCTC offerings.
If you are not eligible to teach your assigned subject area OR if you prefer to teach a subject area other than the area you have been assigned to teach, please follow these steps:
- Check the Subject Area Appeals Survey (when available after you receive an offer) to determine whether you are eligible to teach your preferred subject area. Note that your appeal will not be considered until you receive an offer to join our program.
- If you are eligible to teach your preferred subject area, submit a subject area appeal to our team.
- We will follow up with you if we need additional information and to provide you with a status update regarding your subject area appeal.
Note that we evaluate appeals based on the needs of the Department of Education as well as candidate eligibility.

Bilingual Education in Spanish (Grades 1-6)

Candidates who have advanced language proficiency in both English and Spanish and possess a bachelor’s degree in most fields are eligible to become certified in bilingual education. Candidates who receive offers to the program will have their transcripts evaluated by our university partners to determine if they have a sufficient mix of liberal arts coursework to meet New York State requirements and will be required to pass the Bilingual Language Proficiency Exam. Some candidates may be required to take additional coursework to earn their Initial Certification.

English as a New Language (Grades K-12)
|
Candidates will be considered eligible to teach English as a New Language with a bachelor’s degree in any subject area and 12 or more credits in any foreign language or combination of languages (including ASL).

Mathematics (Grades 5-9 or 7-12)
|
Candidates who possess a bachelor’s degree in math are eligible to teach math. Candidates who have earned a B or better 12 Math college level Math courses including calculus may be considered on a case-by-case basis as a Math Immersion candidate and would be required to take additional coursework in math during their graduate program in order to earn the necessary credits for New York State certification in math. Strong candidates will also have additional college-level math-intensive courses beyond the one required calculus course.

Science: Biology or Chemistry (Grades 7-12)

Candidates teaching science will be certified to teach biology, chemistry or general science. Candidates who possess a bachelor’s degree in the following sciences are eligible to teach science: Astronomy, Biology, Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Earth Science, Geology, Physics and Zoology.
Candidates who do not have a degree in science but who have at least 12 credits in science overall or 9 credits within a particular science core area (with a grade of B- or better in each science course) may be considered on a case by case basis as Science Immersion candidates and would be required to take additional coursework in science during their graduate program in order to earn the necessary credits.
Courses in the following fields count toward eligibility to teach science: Anatomy, Animal Science, Astronomy, Biochemistry, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Earth Science, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Forestry, Geology, Hydrology, Marine Science, Meteorology, Neuroscience, Oceanography, Physics and Zoology.
Candidates who possess a degree in one of the following science-related majors will be considered for the science program: Natural Science, Agriculture and Life Science, Conservation, Forestry, Wild Life and Fishery, Biotechnology.
Courses in the following fields do not count toward eligibility to teach science: Anthropology, Engineering, Environmental Law, Environmental Science (social and policy-oriented courses), Geography, Human Behavior, Human Ecology, Kinesiology, Mechanical Engineering, Nutrition, Psychology, Social Sciences and Sociology.

Students with Disabilities (Grades 7-12) |
Candidates who possess a bachelor’s degree in most fields are eligible to teach students with special needs. Candidates who receive offers to the program will have their transcripts evaluated by our university partners to determine if they have a sufficient mix of liberal arts coursework to meet New York State requirements; some candidates may be required to take additional coursework to earn their Initial Certification. This year, candidates may be assigned to teach special education at the elementary or secondary level, based upon their preferences and district hiring need.

District 75 provides citywide educational, vocational, and behavior support programs for students who have moderate to severe disabilities in self-contained classrooms. In District 75, special education teachers teach smaller groups of 6-15 students with moderate to severe disabilities. Note that eligibility to teach in District 75 requires a robust amount of liberal arts coursework.
